Why do we lie?

Updated: May 1, 2019

Honesty is told to be the best policy... but is it really?

We are only human. It's almost as if that we have been bending the truth since we were born. But why is that? Why do we lie? The most important reason for one to lie is because we want to protect our self, or we want to protect the other person. Weather we lie to promote ourselves or protect ourselves or others, it affects other people in either a kind or cruel way.

Then there are the situations that are inexplicable, even to us. Sometimes we just lie to lie. There is absolutely no reason, or we just don't know how to explain it. The number one reason people lie, however, is because they think the issue is way more important than it actually is.

Sometimes people as if telling the truth makes them lose control of the situation, they are in.

The truth can be “inconvenient” because it might not conform to their narrative.

- David J. Ley Ph.D., 2017.

Other reasons to lie is also not to disappoint the people that are close to you. Sometimes the lies get intense or the person actually starts being its not a lie anymore. They become delusional.

Instead of bringing someone down for lying, encourage them to tell the truth. Understand that there are a lot of things that goes into the lie and just words. There are feelings and emotions. Encourage the power of truth telling. Show them that the world won’t come to an end when the truth comes out.
